Update #1: Pepsi Machine, Farm Tools, and David Hasselhoff

Supposedly this ol' girl still keeps the cans cold.

Well it’s been a couple of weeks since I first had this nutty idea, and while I was hoping to have already moved onto trade #2 by now, I’m still at the starting line.

That doesn’t mean their hasn’t been any offers. Boy, has their been some interesting phone calls, texts, and emails. Some good, some bad, some hilarious. Plenty mediocre.

I think I’m going to stop answering the calls, as it’s easier to tell someone you’re not interested in their 56 pc. Christmas village set via email than it is over the phone.

A couple of really promising trades never ended up coming to fruition, including a newer Galaxy phone that was valued at $700. I’m not sure what it is about Craigslist…

Bonus points for the creativity.

Over the last 10 years or so, I’ve had a lot of success buying, selling, and trading, but I’d still love to learn more about the Craigslist-phenomenon of people who are in constant communication at one moment, and then vanish off the face of the planet in a blink – sometimes even after you strike a deal and make meeting arrangements.

And I’m not talking about the obvious spam texts/emails that run rampant on Craigslist, I’m talking local people. It’s truly baffling.

Anyway, I want to make sure I kick this off on the right foot (remember, the goal is to trade-up in value) so I’m hesitant to jump at offers with iPhone 5’s and old laptops that are valued at $100. Those seem to be the most popular offers I’m getting, although there has been a few noteworthy things.

High(and low)lights for this update:

  • 80s Pepsi vending machine
  • Chainsaw
  • David Hasselhoff promo cut outs (lol)
  • Farm tools
  • Star Wars memorabilia
  • Snowblower
  • Specialized mountain bike
  • One day of labor – landscaping / tree pruning
  • Hockey skates
  • Red Sox tickets
  • Generic department store drinking glasses (wtf?)
  • Outdoor patio set
  • Weed whacker

I’m going to keep being patient until the right deal presents itself.

I never did hear from him again. I wonder what the male/female trade differential was going to be?

snowboard

There are $30 Kmart snowboards and there are snowboards that are functional to go down mountains. I thought this was a pretty legitimate question. Apparently Rick didn’t think so. Whatever Rick.

  1. What an amazing concept! I give you kudos for undertaking this exciting endeavor, especially when you go on stalker sites like craigslist and deal with people over the phone. Personally, I wouldn’t get caught dead communicating over the phone because you get cranks and nuts. Still, can’t wait to see how things go from here. Very cool concept and you have the Hoff involved so it can only get better!

    1. Haha thanks. I don’t think I could have scripted a more ridiculous item than the Hoff cardboard cutout… Craigslist, man.
